Elder Abuse, Alzheimers and Our Aging Population

While taken seriously enough to be a legally reportable offense categorized alongside child abuse as either a misdemeanor or a felony - elder abuse does not seem to be taken as seriously by the public. Perhaps elders do not appear to be as helpless as children, but many times they are.

Emotional Abuse: The Abuse Beneath Abuse

Abuse in the context of an intimate relationship involves a persistent pattern of behaviors. It is not simply a mistake, an isolated incident or a sudden loss of control. The husband, who engages in this style of relating, misuses his wife for selfish ends and violates her dignity and self-determination. While he may not intend to be abusive, he does intend to achieve the goal that motivates all forms of abuse: to exercise power and to control. Physical abuse can leave bruises, break bones.

Financial Literacy – Parental Financial Abuse

For most of us our parents are the people who protect and take care of us. They are our first love relationship and they teach us what trust is all about. When we think of “abuse” we may think of a physical attack from one person to another. But there are many types of abuse so I have decided to call this one “Parental Financial Abuse.”

My definition of “Parental Financial Abuse” is the act of one or both parents using their child’s identity as well as social security number to get credit and/or services in their name for the purpose of avoiding high deposits or being denied access to credit. Usually a parent does this act to get services such as a phone or utilities and sometimes credit because they have ruined their own identity and made bad financial choices in the past. So in most cases their bad decisions continue on with the stolen identity and the child’s credit profile is also destroyed.

Domestic violence affects an estimated 8 million people each year. It is not limited to any gender or orientation, and it can encompass many levels of abuse, such as physical, mental, and emotional. However, another frustrating and frightening form of domestic violence is financial abuse. Although this is most often associated with people taking advantage of the elderly, it can also affect those in marriages or long-term partnerships with an abusive person.
