Sexual Abuse

Sexual abuse isn’t that rarest of rare cases, it is common and very often hidden by the family or the victim. Violence against women in the family occurs in both developing and the most developed countries. The trouble is that it is often considered a private matter by the bystanders – that is the kith and kin as well as neighbors, the community and even the governmental agencies. I am sure that in the minds of most of you the image of Jose Frtizel, the Austrian monster is still fresh.

What is Sexual Abuse?

Sexual abuse is the forcing of unwanted sexual behavior from one individual onto another. It is often referred to as molestation and while it can be very serious it does not carry the same severity as sexual assault. This is because molestation can be much more subtle and less physically violent. By knowing what types of sexual abuse exist you will be better able to protect your rights and interests should you ever be charged of committing molestation.

Sexual Abuse Affects Self Confidence and Self Esteem

Years ago, I taught Caution Without Fear (a program with the same name aimed at teaching safety in all areas of life) in the local school district. We stressed a lot about “good touch” and “bad touch” and the parents and staff were grateful for the service I was providing. The kids listened and responded as I had been trained to watch for. I was considered an expert in the facts surrounding sex abuse.

As a family, we had many talks about boundaries and that our bodies belong only to ourselves. Everyone gave the right responses and acted like they understood, but one daughter just turned her head and refused to look at us. A big clue that we missed.

Sexual Abuse Survivors – Choosing a Therapist

Sexual abuse is a traumatic and damaging experience. By definition, sexual abuse is a boundary violation. For the survivor, the feelings of betrayal, shame, guilt and distrust are often long-lasting.

These feelings are very painful to contain and, containing them is toxic. Since shame is so prevalent among people who have been abused, keeping it a secret is not uncommon. But, by keeping it a secret, shame and guilt lead the person to blame herself (himself). This fosters self-hate, fear, distrust and self-destructive behavior.

Types of Physical Abuse in Nursing Homes

Every year, an untold number of elderly men and women suffer physical abuse in their nursing homes. Many of these cases go unreported for several reasons, but this does not justify the abuse. Individuals live in nursing homes to receive special attention and care, not to be subjected to abuse.

In most cases, nursing home attendants are responsible for committing these acts of physical abuse. They may have a number of motives, including frustration with patients or emotional distress. Regardless of the motive, abusing patients is never acceptable.

Physical Abuse – Spousal

Physical abuse of a spouse has no boundaries. It occurs in every aspect of society and in all cultures. It has no age limit, gender or color and no ethnic or religious affiliation. It occurs on a daily basis, yet, it is one of the most under-reported crimes, primarily, due to the victim’s feelings of shame, humiliation or fear of ridicule. Statistical data on spousal abuse is available across income levels. It is based on social strata and is dependent on how the victim seeks help. Low income abuse is usually tracked through the use of shelters, court orders, and social services. White collar or higher income spousal abuse is not so easily tracked, because the victim usually has the means to remove themselves from an abusive relationship without the help of shelters or social services. The abuse on this level is more often cited in cases of divorce. Statistical data is also available on battered husbands, but such instances are the least reported. The overall analysis of data on domestic violence shows that wives suffer far more abuse than husbands.

Verbal and Physical Abuse

There are many common misconceptions when it comes to abuse. First, there is not just one type of abuse, there are lots of different kinds and it does not just come from a romantic partner, it can come from parents, other family members, friends, and even acquaintances. The most important thing for people to know is how to spot abuse and how to get help for themselves of for those around them when abuse has occurred. There are two main types of abuse, verbal and physical. Both of which need to be addressed immediately in order for there to be any chance of the person doing the abusing to stop. In a report completed by bail bonds NJ most of the time the person inflicting the abuse on another is emotionally unstable and therefore needs some kind of help as well as the person who is being abused. According to a bailbondsman NJ, times of economic distress are when jails see the most increase in violent behavior against others. Because of the economic situation in the United States right now, it is important for people to be aware of the signs of abuse and how to stop and/or prevent it.

Bed Sores and Elderly Neglect

Bed sores, also known as skin ulcers, occur when certain parts of the body (such as the tailbone, elbows, buttocks or heels) are put under pressure causing the skin to break down and become infected. In the most severe cases, bed sores can progress beyond the skin and affect the bone beneath. This can cause infection to the bone, and can even necessitate amputation if not treated. However, bed sores are entirely preventable with proper medical care and treatment.

Nursing Home Neglect and Bedsore Injuries

Unfortunately, not all nursing homes take good care of their patients. If you have a loved one in a nursing home, keep an eye out for signs of neglect. In efforts to cut costs, some nursing homes have decreased their staffing and as a result, patients are suffering.

A common sign and symptom of nursing home abuse is bedsores. These are caused by failing to keep a patient clean, well nourished and not moving them often enough. Other signs of neglect include: overmedicating, malnutrition, depression, and poor hygiene.
